Why I Don’t Use Whey Protein in My Smoothie


I’ve been drinking smoothies for the last 7 years, and 5 of them I have been using different superfoods, mainly to add vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids and proteins to my daily menu.

Proteins are the ones that make a smoothie a perfect meal. If I want to make a protein smoothie, I always add vegetable protein to it. Do you know why whey protein is not suitable for this?

Let’s go over what are the problems surround whey protein.

Just protein with no other nutritional value

Protein is important, but one cannot live off protein alone, which means that there is still a need to consume various additives. Whey protein has undergone long processing and as a result, another nutritional value has been destroyed and only protein remains.

In reality, it was originally a byproduct of the cheese industry, but there is no such processing with plant protein. Adding vegetable protein to the smoothie helps you increase the nutritional value and mineral content in addition to the protein level.

Whey protein has a vague flavor that cannot make a delicious smoothie

The idea of a smoothie is to use pure and fresh ingredients, and it is not a good idea to go and mix it with “cinnamon bun cookies“ or “creamy mint chocolate cheesecake“ protein mixes!

These flavors are designed to hide the side-effects of the protein and make its consumption a little more enjoyable.

The water-soluble powder must have a strong dominant taste, otherwise, it would be impossible to drink.

Various fruits and berries can give smoothies the flavor and there is no need to use artificial flavoring to make it drinkable.

Whey protein blends contain thickeners

Products that need to be mixed/diluted with water contain different thickeners to get the right texture. The most commonly used natural thickener is xanthan gum.

It is a substance used to prepare some food to keep the texture and different ingredients together. It is important to know that it does not contain natural nutrients as it is a processed ingredient created by the food industry.

Also, your body cannot digest it and may have several digestive problems. In addition, it cannot be excluded that there may be other side effects that no one is aware of at the moment.

Whey protein powders are flavored by chemical additives

Aspartame, Acesulfame, and Sucralose – These are three examples of artificial sweeteners that you may occasionally encounter when consuming products containing whey protein powder.

Why should I want to add extra sweets to my diet?!

Smoothie is just as sweet if you add a banana or mango. If I want a sweeter smoothie, I prefer something natural: dates and honey for example.

One healthy smoothie is balanced with fruits, berries and green leaves such as spinach or kale. Adding pure vegetable protein helps to complement a healthy diet without unhealthy sweeteners.

Too many ingredients I don’t get

If there are more than 10 ingredients in one product, it is too much and if you cannot even pronounce these names, there is definitely something wrong. Food should not be difficult – but if you look at the list of whey protein ingredients, the only familiar word is whey.

Ingredients: maltodextrin from corn, whey protein from milk, vegetable fat (coconut oil), fragrances, cocoa-banana-toffee, peanut butter, chocolate substitute, stabilisator (E466), emulgator (E322 sunflower), vitamin-mineral mix, retinyl acetate, colecalciferol, d-alpha-tocopherol, thiamine hCl, riboflavin, nicotinamide, ca d-pantothenate, pyridoxine hCl, cyanic-balamine, pteroyl monoglutamic acid, d-biotin, L-ascorbic acid, iron fumarate, zinc gluconate, copper gluconate, potassium iodide, chromium sulfate, mangan gluconate, sodium selenate, sweetener (sucralose E950), dye E101, mango-yoghurt flavor.

Everything else is incomprehensible and confusing and you cannot distinguish the necessary ingredients from the unnecessary ones.

In addition to the abnormal flavors, thickeners, and sweeteners mentioned above, there are still ingredients added to the whey protein that should help make the product more enjoyable, but which the body does not need.

Whey protein contains lactose

More and more research has shown that milk can cause our health more problems than benefits. Since animal whey protein is derived from processed milk and contains lactose, it falls into this category.

Lactose causes problems in the stomach that vegetable proteins do not. As side effects, animal proteins can cause bloating and severe feelings.

When combined with a fresh smoothie, this will be amplified. I recommend only using vegetable protein sources in smoothies, as they are easily digested by the human body and fit smoothies without causing any problems to your stomach.

All in all, the world of whey protein is too complicated and has become unhealthy, so I recommend using only pure and vegetable protein sources in smoothies.

What to keep in mind when choosing a protein for your smoothie

  • Prefer plant-based protein
  • No extra flavors
  • Without sweeteners
  • Without additives (thickeners, etc.)
  • The ingredients are clear and understandable

When choosing protein powder, always check in with the ingredients that have been used. Do we really need to put a bunch of additives in our bodies just to get protein out of it?
